I was discussing last night that Malkorok's Bloodrage is soaked by a single tank in heroic, and sometimes just the 2 tanks. The reason for this in heroic is a new mechanic where orbs spawn around the room that remove people's absorb shield and the dps and heals need to be free to remove them from the field during this stage because they pile up fast.
If we have any aspirations towards getting into heroics before the new expansion, it is good to start practicing this now.
So, here are some facts as to how this ability works:
Bloodrage swings are not traditional melee attacks in that they cannot be dodged or parried, but it is physical damage. It also ignores armor and immunity effects like ice block.
Bloodrage lasts 20 seconds and deals 1.8M damage every 2.5 seconds - so 8 hits.
It does count as AoE damage though, so Rook's trinket is a must. It is also strongly encouraged to the have trinket which reduced tank cds as you'll need to save these cds and have them up for this phase both times.
Let's assume we have 2 tanks soaking this and discuss specifics of how to make this feasible. I will only go into DK and Monk tanks for this since that's what we have in our bullpen at the moment.
2 tanks means they're each taking 900k damage. That's almost their entire health pool, but it's a good starting point.
Death Knight:
Rook's Talisman (10m fully upgraded) - 38% damage reduction for 15 secs
Icebound Fortitude - 50% DR for 12 secs
Bone Shield - 20% DR (6 charges that can be extended to cover all 8 hits)
Vampiric Blood - Increase Health by 15% and healing received by 25% for 10 secs (glyph removes bonus health but gives 15% more healing)
First 10 seconds:
Weakened Blows Debuff lowers damage by 10% = 810k damage per hit
20% for Bone Shield = 630k damage taken per hit
IceBound Fortitude, another 50% reduction = 180k damage taken per hit
Wait several seconds in to use -
Rook's Talisman, another 38% reduction = In theory, this provides 108% DR and should nullify all incoming damage.
Last 10 seconds:
Weakened Blows = 810k damage per hit
Bone Shield still active = 630k damage per hit
Rook's Talisman = 288k damage per hit
Vampiric Blood = won't mitigate the damage but will help healers cover the damage and empowered Death Strikes timed after each hit.
Monk:
Let's assume a low mastery build of 10%, so 10% of incoming damage will be staggered and cleansed.
Rook's Talisman - 38% DR for 15 secs
Guard is not a significant factor. Elusive Brew does not apply here since these attacks can't be dodged.
Dampen Harm (Talent) - Next 3 attacks that deal 20% or more of your health have their damage reduced by 50%
Zen Meditation - 90% DR for 8 secs (Bloodrage does not break it)
Fortifying Brew - +20% Health, +20% Stagger, + 20 DR for 20 secs (3 min cd, requires use of the CD reducing trinket to have this available for both Bloodrages which are 3 mins apart)
First 10 seconds:
Weakened Blows = 810k damage per hit
Fortifying Brew = 630k damage per hit
Stagger factored in (will count only half this value to assume half of the stagger damage is not cleansed, so 15%) = 495k damage per hit
Zen Meditation = in theory, this is over 100% damage reduction for its duration
Last 12 seconds:
Weakened Blows, Fortifying Brew and Stagger all active = 495k damage per hit
Rook's Talisman = 153k damage per hit
This still leaves Dampen Harm unused. Could be used in place of Fortifying Brew if CD reduction trinket not available.
Further logistics:
If you want to see how to solo tank this, simply double all the numbers above and it's still pretty reasonable. While the damage might be high, the healers being able to focus on 1 target means massive incoming heals that should the big spikes.
Additionally, look for other defensive cds - Warrior Demoralizing Banner, Warrior Safeguard, Paladin Hand of Sacrifice and other assorted healer cds I'm not familiar with.
