The staff and I decided it was necessary to outline the differences between in-character and out-of-character chat, and how to properly differentiate them within text for both in-game and forum role play.
This thread is made as a resource to clear up discrepancies that happened when people would get confused during events and respond to others as a character while it raid chat, or some other way.
The following is what we expect you to know when you come to any role-play event or start any role-play thread in which character interaction will happen.
In-Character Chat (IC): This is what you use when acting and playing as your character.
When role-playing in WoW, the following dialogue options are what should be used as IC-chat:
/s for speaking as your character regularly; you may use quotation marks to differentiate speech from actions while in this chat
/tell *charactername* or /whisper *charactername* for private dialogue between two characters
/y for yelling or screaming as your character; you may also use quotation marks here if you'd like to include actions as well as speech
/e for doing things, or taking actions as your character
* use in the appropriate chat when correcting something previously submitted
When role-playing on the forum any sentence or paragraph you write as your character is considered IC, as we don't need to worry about different chat specifications here. Please, though, remember to put (IC) in the title of the thread, so people know it's for characters.
*Private messages can be used for role-playing, and are particularly useful for private dialogues between characters.
Out-of-Character Chat (OOC): This is what you use when not speaking or acting as your character.
When in WoW:
/raid, /party, /instance, etc Any and all group chats are considered strictly OOC; RPing that occurs here is to be corrected and/or ignored as of these guidelines being posted
( enter OOC text here ) Parenthesis are to be used for OOC when not grouped with others; use these in /s, /tell, /y, etc...
Example: (Hey guys, this has nothing to do with the role play, but I totally love kittens.)
When RPing on the forums, parenthesis are the only form of OOC necessary.
If you have any questions regarding these guidelines, please post them here.
