I've had this come up a few times, a concise explanation is in order for anyone unclear about how Jewelcrafting gems work. Socketed gems started with BC gear.
Gems come in 3 types: Colored, Meta and Prismatic. Prismatic have been phased out and haven't been used since Wrath, so those generic/uncolored slots you see on gear like Belt Buckles now use any colored gem. Meta Gms are for helms and are transmuted by Alchemists using various other gems: the exact recipe changes each expansion and greatly alters the price of Meta Gems as a result. For example: in Cata, Meta Gems were made from common gems and thus cheap to make and procure while in Mists, they are made from several uncommon gems and thus rarer and more expensive as they deplete resources from the normal gem market.
Colored gems come in 6 colors: 3 primary colors (Red, Blue, Yellow) and 3 secondary colors (Purple, Orange, Green).
Colored gems come in 3 tiers: common, uncommon and epic. Common gems are generally used for making jewelry as they offer inferior stats when cut for sockets. Uncommon gems are what players use 90% of the time. Epic gems are always debuted from the final raid of an expansion, offer better stats but also tend to be prohibitively expensive if you don't raid. Note, there are no epic gems for this expansion.
Red Gems govern: Intellect, Strength, Agility, Parry and Expertise - largely the dps boosting stats and mitigation for tanks. Pure expertise gems aren't utilized due to reforging.
Blue gems govern: Stamina, Spirit, Hit Rating and PvP Power - an assortment of stats with no real theme other than not falling in the other 2 categories. Aside from Spirit gems, these gems are rarely used.
Yellow gems govern: Haste, Crit, Mastery and PvP Resilience - all the secondary stats found on gear.
Purple gems are a mix of Red and Blue gem stats. These are the second most commonly used with their connection to red gem dps boosting stats.
Orange gems are a mix of Red and Yellow gem stats. These are the most popular and commonly used due to their connection to 2 dps boosting stats.
Green gems are a mix of Yellow and Blue gem stats. These are rarely used since they offer little benefit to dps.
Purple, Orange and Green gems come in every possible stat combination given their parent primary gem colors. So, while there are 4 or 5 cuts for each of the primary color gems, there are 16-20 cuts for each of the secondary color gems.
